You speak as if the local business owners don't pay their workers peanuts, or as if the locals don't cut down virgin forests.

It is not truel that people are only expats if the are white or rich. I have belonged to multiple expat sites, and there are people on them of all creeds and colors.

The word is derived from ex patris, and it just means you are not living in your homeland.

Also, as a German citizen, currently resident in Ireland, I am expat. However I am not an immigrant. I don't have to immigrate or get a visa to live in any EU country or any EEA country. The same applied when I lived in the UK, Spain and Portugal. When I lived in America, I was an immigrant and also ex patris.
