You forget something. NATO was also formed at the end of WWII to prevent Germany from going to war again. And as the British Empire was alive and well at the time, and far more powerful than America at that time, NATO was not owned or run by Americans.
In addition, America has benefited wholesomely from the arrangements. They have had access to other countries for their basis, so that if they had to mobilize quickly, they could do so.
Some years ago, the American Airforce asked the UK if they could have a base to park their planes if America had to go to war with Iran or something. The UK refused.
America dragged NATO into war with Afghanistan and Iraq for reasons of petty revenge. Consequently, they destablzilized the entire Middle East, and nothing has changed in Afghanistan. The Taliban still rule.
The EU and other countries have enormous issues with Americans spying on them, disrespecting the sovereignty of other countries, and thinking that a bullet is the answer to everything.
I think you might find that your rather biased view of the EU might blow up in your face.
