Churchill had to beg America to join the war which started in September 1939. America only joined in 1941 after Pearl Harbour.
In addition, during the 11 years I was in the States, I kept being told that America won the war on behalf of the Allies, echoing your 'protecting Allied forces from falling to the Axis powers."
The reality is that according to international historians, the British Empire would have won WW|II anyway, without American help - just two years later.
Also, it was the USSR that provided more men and more weapons, and were the first in Berlin. They provided the greatest contribution to victory for the Allied forces.
