You also have to take into consideration the culture that encourages people to believe that money (and not character) is what makes them successful. Without a culture constantly putting forward that success means fame or fortune, the rich wouldn't get to have that much influence or power. In fact, fewer people would aspire to being rich. Character would be more important.
