When Politics and Governance are Misaligned…
Politicians are no longer focused on good governing, and there’s a reason.

There was a time when a politician’s job was to govern the country. This had more to do with administration. In other words, there were things to be done — bridges had to be built and roads taken care of, regulations were created so that nobody took advantage of anyone else, and such like.
That is no longer the case, and this is the main reason why nothing gets done.
I list the reasons below.
The underlying value system of the world changed
The zeitgeist of the last quarter of the 20th century, and the first two decades of the 21st century has been about status and money. Alongside that, there has been a major switch from essentialism to non-essentialism. To put that in a nutshell, everything becomes changeable. There is no definite right or wrong. There is no label or definition for anything. No politician can be expected to live according to a code of honor. No rich man can be held accountable for using nefarious means to make billions. It doesn’t matter if someone lied all the way to the senate. Nothing matters. There is no truth. Everything is one’s perception. And as such, there is the demand that everybody respects everybody else’s ‘reality,’ regardless of whether the other person sees the same thing. That can drive one nuts.

I would also imagine that in that kind of climate a politician wouldn’t know if his name was Arthur or Martha. He would have have to be all things to all people. The name of the game is to win at all costs, and if Peter has to say that he is in agreement with Paul at midnight, he is perfectly within his rights to tell Mary that he does not agree with Paul at all — one minute after midnight.
