When I was at college in the States, I discovered virtually everybody had a problem with basic literacy. It doesn’t help that teachers and professors tell students that it doesn’t matter if the grammar is wrong so long as what is written is understood.

That is unadulterated nonsense. The purpose of grammar is to ensure understanding.

In my opinion, nobody who lacks basic literacy should consider a career as a writer.
