You're assuming that only religion can give moral leadership. it was the Enlightenment that brought equality (tolerance), etc to the forefront.

I don't doubt that Christianity had a strong role in an orderly and rigid society. However, outlawing it is good for society - not bad. We need to have values that are based on survival and the greater good - not what primitive men have said.

These can be determined through reason and evidence.
