What is a Chinese Counterfeit Product?
I think we need to be more exact in our definitions. What’s yours?
In writing a recent article, that China won the trade-war with America, several people mentioned that China counterfeited luxury products, that they were cheaper, made of inferior materials, and that they stole the ideas from the original designer.
As I hold three design qualifications, one of which is in fashion, I would like to say that it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to design wearable clothes that have not been designed and made at some point in history. This is why some fashion shows are so bizarre — because the ‘designer’ cannot come up with something new (which doesn’t look stupid).
My point is that a Chinese designer is very likely to have designed the exact same thing as a western designer, simply because they have the same history books to see what was done before. This is not rocket science. To claim that China is only capable of producing things that are copies of the work of others in the west is beyond ignorant.
