Well your writing may or may not be worthless. I don't know. The bottom line is that writing is an oversubscribed occupation, and it has never been a well-paid one.
In order to get somewhere, you need the following.
1. To be well connected with the kind of people who will give you jobs, a publishing opportunity, etc.
2. Have gone to the 'right' schools.
3. Have capital to either self-publish and market.
4. Have one helluve talent, etc.
5. Lucky.
6. Lucky.
7. Lucky.
8. Lucky
9. Lucky
10. Lucky
Wayne Dyer, the New York psychiatrist who was an international bestselling author for years, was declined by all publishers. He had the money to have 2000 copies printed, then went round to all the bookshops and downloaded them there. Then he went back and bought them all. He got into the New York Times bestselling list that way.
I think what is misleading is that just because one can write, people will read you. There are far fewer readers than writers these days. It's just simple math.
