…d becomes yours, and that you cease to be controlled by religion. Perhaps to an extent this is true. But Berard acts as if religion is the only controlling force in the world. He totally ignores other aspects of ideology, such as the assumptions of liberalism, mainly the idea of the free individual and the necessity of a market economy (ideology which Berard is steeped in, seeing he thinks that the Republican Party is the cause of all the political backwardness in America).

Well, yes, I grew up with a lot of those ideas, was taught them at school and college. It was only really in my early 50s that I came to realize that they were highly destructive.
