Well, yes. The French don't like anyone who speaks English because they don't like the British. I discovered that my first time in France in 1975. So I spoke Afrikaans when I first approached them. Whole world of difference. Same thing in Portugal. So when I speak to anyone. I open either with

"Guten Morgen, wie geht es Ihnen heute? or

"Goeie More. Hoe gaan dit moet jou vandag?

Then they look at me blankly, and I look at them blankly. And then they speak to me in English, and my whole face lights up. And I converse in English.

Way to go. :)
