Well, if one has a good public transport system, then they use train, bus, or cab - just like everybody else. The entire point of building a massive state-of-the-art public transport system is that so one can go anywhere no matter where one is - by public transport. It is the only viable option to save the planet from climate change.
In Europe and in the UK, no matter where you are, there is public transport. The only reason the States don't have a decent public transport system is that they prefer to spend the tax money on weapons and a military.
By the way, you were wrong in what you said about viral epidemics only lasting a few years. The bottom line is that we can only historically plot those communities that survived - not the ones that didn't survive. So you cannot use history as proof that this pandemic will soon be gone.
The virus is morphing all the time, and it's becoming more deadly - not more benign. Delta is 60% to 75% more transmissable than the original virus. Plus, it lives in the noses and throats of those who have been vaccinated, and although those people don't get ill, they are infectious to others. This is why the CDC and WHO have indicated that we need to start wearing masks again.
The bottom line is there is no reason why a virus shouldn't become more deadly. Delta Variant has, and Epison is next. This is going to be with us for a very long time.
With regard to farming, it will move to the cities. That beginning has already been made. It makes much more sense. Vertical farming makes it totally doable.

There is also absolutely no reason why a farmer in a rural area can't call for a cab. That's a helluve cheaper than having to pay for the upkeep of one's own vehicles.
I think you need to look at what is happening out there.
