Well. I grew up in South Africa, spent many years in the UK, and lived in America for 11 years. All English speakers, in every country I know of (including the English media) understand America to be the US. Another phrase used is ‘the States.’

When referring to both North and South America, we refer to ‘ the Americas.’ When we speak about North America, we speak about Canada, the US, and Mexico.

Of course, I could be mistaken but I read numerous news sources from many different countries, and I think I would have picked up something like thar.
