Well, I grew up in a secular family - Jewish father, Christian mother. I went to a Christian boarding school (Anglican) and then spent 10 years as an evangelical Christian, then 10 years exploring all sorts of 'spirituality, then converted to become Jewish.

Today I'm an atheist.

What one is taught as a Jew depends widely on who brought one up, which denomination one attended. Being a Jew depends on only one thing - Was your mother Jewish. If your mother wasn't Jewish, then you are not Jewish.

I think if one has to depend on love in order to do the right thing, then we are lost. I advocate that principles and ethics are taught and ingrained, regardless of what one's feelings are to other people.

I think it's also unrealistic to think that people are capable of loving everybody.
