Well, fortunately, I did have a broad education:

English, Afrikaans, Latin, French, German, World history (From Eolithic man through European, American, and South African history), Geography (including knowing the capitals of all countries, where they are on the map, climate, etc.) Physics, Chemisty, Biology, Art, English Literature, English Grammar, and English Essay writing, Math, and I'm not sure what else. That was pretty standard (except that I did extra languages).

We also had to write essays from about the age of 14 up, and we had to justify all the conclusions we drew.

This is called a classical education.

Also, outside of America, in Europe, in the west, it is the norm to travel to other countries for a few years (from continent to continent), so one gets a very broad view.
