Until the start of the industrial revolution, mankind worked a 20 hour work week. The records in the British Domes Day boook and some very early French records indicate this. It's also shown in indigenous tribes. Mammals also work a 20 hour work week. In other words, the human species evolved to work a 20 hour work week.
What you're talking about is a capitalistic economy, In the economy that I am proposing, capitalism doesn't exist. If people want to work, they can, and if they don't want to work, they don't have to. Consider that once 50% of business is shut down, and once only the essentials are produced, there is very little work to be done.
With AI, computerisation, mechanics, engineering, one does not need masses of people working.
In the economy I propose, business will not be for profit, and there will be no need for unions. If people chose not to work, they won't have to, so they just walk out. Of course, there won't be any bosses to mistreat them either.
There is a reason that, internationally, depending on the country, 75% to 95% of people hate their jobs.
In the world you're accustomed to, business wonership, corporations, well, yes, there are horrible people who own and manage these companies. There's a reason that 1% of the general population are psychopaths, but 21% of business owners and CEOs are psychopaths. In order to get into those sort of positions, one has to trample on people.
So, yes, the kind of people who work for reward aren't particularly nice people. They're driven by their appetites - not by principle.
I'll leave it at that.
For the record, I'm not American. I am a dual South African/German, currently living in Ireland.
