To me, what you were saying is that if the landlord couldn’t make a hefty profit, then the apartments couldn’t be fixed up. And that people who lived in slums were responsible for making it a slum, and that you and your landlord were so much better and so much superior because you didn’t trash the place and your landlord charged you less money because he knew what a superb tenant you were.

So everybody else is to blame for their own circumstances.
