They bought into the kool-aid. Writing is a very poorly paid job. The IRS indicates that your average writer earns $1000 per year. Those that earn more either:

1. Got in early.

2. Got lucky

3. Have connections

4. Have awesome talent.

There are now far few readers than there are writers.
