There's a book called "I'm Okay, You're Okay" which explains why some people blame others, some people blame themselves, and some people (rarely) can figure out the real issues. I read it a very long time ago.
I also learnt about 'brainwashing' when I first read about Edward Bernays, but I came to understand the power of the unconscious mind when I learnt about Jung's interpretation of dreams. That was in about 1980, I think.
I finally figured out the unconscious mind as I had to cure myself of PTSD. In any event, I have never been influenced by people and advertising.
