There is a difference in the understanding of the word 'socialism' by older Americans and younger Americans. Younger Americans are referring to the mixed economies of the 50s and 60s and which Europe still have today.

Democratic socialism is another name for a mixed economy. This is a very different type of socialism to the totaliarianism of the USSR and China. They are fascist forms of socialism.
