The problem with your article is that they and them used as singular is extremely rare, and it is generally frowned on. Today's use of it is strictly a political statement by a very small minority. Perhaps I am wrong but I very much get the feeling that you wrote the piece in order to justify modern day usage which has more to do with politics than grammar.

The problem with 'respecting other people's choices to use pronouns as they would wish one to is that it goes against the majority who prefer to stick to grammar than to someone's personal choice of pronouns. Pronouns have nothing to do with personal choice - they have to do with clarifying language.

My statement doe snot mean that I object to people living life as they wish to - I very much believe that people are absolutely allowed to make their own choices for their own lives - until it begins to negatively affect the lives of others around them.

I also accept that I come from a different generation.
