The Middle East is very wealthy. Iran was very wealthy, and it still fell to religious idiots. Economics is not the reason for every religion in the world.

Take America, for example. It is the richest, most powerful country in the world, and yet the degree of ignorance and stupidity is rampant in the country. Even your leaders believe in gods. Americans have more people believing in angels and gods than they do in evolution.
