The democrats lost for a combination of reasons. About three years ago, based on the content in social media, as well as articles I saw in the liberal press, I decided I would never call myself a progressive again.

178 000 Amish, disgusted that Pensylvannia libs had shut down an organic farm, signed up to vote for Trump.

Trump focused on legitimate grievances and said he would fix them (whether he will or not is another matter).

My point is that libs are focusing on the 'feelings' and 'human rights' of minorities - at the expense of the majority.
