That's a really interesting observation. Someone accused me of one of my pieces using AI. I was gobsmacked.
I have no interest in AI, don't know how to use it, don't use Grammarly or any other writing tool. I have been published sin e 1962. No need. I can do those things better than any publication tool.
I would, therefore, say that the difference is not the choice of words. I don't think Cotton is wise in the way of words. His syntax is awful.
