That never happened in Africa, Auntie Grav. In the 50s, when I was young, Africa still had hunter gatherer societies. The people lived in 'kraals', didn't wear clothing, and it was NOT about subsistence living.
Where do you see any resemblance to subsistence living here?
Africa was always abundant.
