Sorry, I don't buy that. As you know, I'm the victim of extreme chronic abuse lasting 42 years. According to therapists, I should have been dead by the age of 25, and the fact that I 'achieved' what I did was nothin short of a miracle.
I had absolutely no chance. I survived because of my genes - no other reason.
I would also have the epigenetic heritage of a a holocaust survivor, plus I have two severe disabilities.
I've met plenty of people who lie. They tend to lie for two reasons. They won't get what they want if they tell the truth. For instance, a man might say that he earns more than he does, or he has a higher education than he has. He wants to date a particular woman, so he lies.
Or someone gossiped about someone else. Then she is found out, but she denies it.
This has nothing to do with dysfunctional homes. It has everything to do with havin a shitty character.
And, yes, I know that our personality is shaped by formative experiences. However, as we grow into adulthood, we have the executive function to override that. I did. My brother didn't. My sister didn't. My brother committed suicide in the end. My sister continues, very successfully, to steer her life.
I don't want to go into details, but in the end, it was our different genetic disposition that caused such different end results in the same highly dysfunctional home.
That said, if a driver accidentally kills a man in an accident, it is homicide. He is still accountable. Why are people who come from dysfunctional homes not held accountable?
Sorry, I don't think coming from a dysfunctional home gives one an excuse to be a criminal or hurt others.
