Some people could certainly stay. Others have not received permission to stay. As I was out of the country at the time, there was no way I could apply for a return. This despite the fact that I have had an NI number since 1974 and receive a British pension and have lived there on and off.
I'm not sure what you're reading, but obviously media like the Daily Mail and the Telegraph tell a different story to the Guardian and the Independent.
