Sam, I fundamentally disagree with the idea that writers should support other writers. In no other profession are doctors obliged to support other doctors or singers obliged to support other singers.
By support I mean contribute to them in terms of listening to them, reding them, viewing them, giving them business, etc.
Nobody is obliged to pay other people if the service is offered free. The moral of the story is that the service shouldn't be offered free if there is the hope that something will be received as a consequence.
You know that I would never become a writing tutor - not because I don't have the knowledge, but because I don't have the people skills and the kind of ability to interact with others in that way. I would find it emotionally and intellectually draining.
I do, however, from time to time, write articles that I hope will help others. I don't expect to receive a single thing in return.
Just for some feedback, although I post on your facebook page two or three times a week, I might receive one read from it if I'm lucky. I think you and Randy are the only people who read me.
And I always read two people in return.
If this is happening to me, it's probable that it happens to others as well. Most of my traffic comes from Google and Medium.
This month, after a year on Medium, I may finally (I hope) make a $100. It's mostly been between $45 and $55. What has changed is that Medium is finally sending me traffic. From it I've been able to work out what is happening.
It's a matter of the editors giving a sort of carte blanche approval to your writing. Then it's just routine that they see your work and distribute it. There are some exceptions, but I used to write for three or four months and never been distributed.
Now that my writing is being distributed, about 6 to 10 people are adding me every day, so it was never about my poor writing. It was simply that my writing didn't see enough readership to be appreciated.
You know I will always help you in sharing with you what I learn, etc. That is the only thing that I can give you until I am on my feet.
