No the rise in atheism wasn't caused by a rise in intelligence. I'm not sure why you think that. Most northern European countries and the UK are highly secular. When children weren't brainwashed to believe in gods anymore, those countries because secular. Belief in gods are the result of socialisation and brainwashing.

However, in countries where there is high belief, it is those who are highly educated and highly intelligent who walk away from it.
