QUOTE 21% of Americans 18 and older are illiterate in 2022. 54% of adults have a literacy below sixth-grade level. Throughout the US, there were 66% of children in the fourth grade couldn't read well in 2013. The average American reads at the 7th- to 8th-grade level, according to The Literacy Project.

https://www.crossrivertherapy.com/research/literacy-statistics#:

There are 195 countries in the world. In terms of literacy, America ranks 125.

https://journal.imse.com/the-state-of-global-literacy-and-where-the-united-states-stands/#:

When I was at College in the States, I did some writing classes for easy credits. (I had already been published for about 45 years at the time. I was aghast at the illiteracy of both the professor (who was head of department) and the illiteracy of the students. They were varied ages, but the only person who knew that a casket was a jewellery box (British spelling) was a man my age. The professor who, supposedly, had a masters in English literature did not know that.

Of the 35 students in class, only 3 of them could spell and use grammar correctly.

Only some 11% of Americans have a literacy rate of 4 or 5. That's university level. The majority of Americans read at a grade 6 to 8 level.

So please, you might be able to read and write, but that doesn't mean that everybody else can.
