Progressivism is an economic system while liberalism is a political one. Progressivism is democratic socialism. It believes that the government should act as an equalizer by using taxes to level the playing field for all people. Government does this by providing the essentials - welfare, education, roads, bridges, etc.

Liberalism is concerned with things like abortions, gays, and other ideologies.
