It has something to do with the dollar being expensive, and nobody sees any reason to use dollars when they can easily figure out the value of their own goods without the help of the dollar.

70 years ago when this system came into being, it was based on the fact that America had an enormous gold reserve. That is not true anymore. More to the point, computerisation hadn't been invented yet. Now these things are done in split seconds.
