1. Profit-making doesn’t work because the kind of people who are motivated by profit are generally self-serving, greedy, and a very high number of them are psychopaths. I provided the links.
2. There is no magical, meritocracy element in a free market. It is an open field for criminality. The market is stupid. It does not prepare for things like climate change, pandemics, etc.
