Nope. I don't believe that. I'm pretty sure that the first lot of people who won the $500 on Medium were for people who didn't write about writing. It's success marketers who have found a steady market of wannabe writers who have hijacked the platform. Basically, I muted all magazines that were about self-improvement and writing. And whenever I find someone focused on telling other people how to write, I mute them as well.
