Nobody is holding anyone to any standard. One can always choose to dress any way one likes.

The real issue is that people who look a certain way tend to get the prize, and if one wants the prize, then one needs to look that way.

One can always choose to accept that the prize only goes to a few, and that for the most part, we live without those prizes.
