Yup, it irritated me as well, for the same reasons. If I had that response from people, I would immediately look to see where I had it wrong.
Depth of perspective is not generally an American attribute. Life is too easy, too fast, too focused on material success and entertainment.
That said, I guess I've lived and worked in many countries, and all people, regardless of their culture, are human. There are commonalities. The trick when arriving in a new country is to find the commonalities.
