Medium is failing, and it is failing because readers (not writers) are fleeing. I am more reader than writer, and I can assure you that it's not really worth paying $5 per month here in order to read.
Last month the Atlantic pulled out. Everything has gone - the New York Times, the Economist, etc. and it has been replaced by a whole lot of wannabe writers. And they're all writing about writing. I actually want to read about the 6th mass extinction, about the fact that an antidepresant is showing stunning results against Covid, and about the wild fires in Siberia, etc.
Medium is NOT supposed to be a social networking site, and you're speaking as if it is. It started off as a place for people to read, then it morphed into a content writing site, and now it's a blogging stie - still not a social networking site.
With regard concerning your advice to other writers, you might be sharing your experiences, but that has nothing to do with being able to write to a publication standard, i.e. published in magazines like the New Yorker, the Financial Times, Cosmopolitan, etc.
So what advice are you giving? Do you mean that you're sharing how to get readers on Medium? That is a very different thing to being able to write.
You say, "I am here to share from the depth of my heart, to learn, have fun and connect." Um. yes, that's what you do on a social networking site. That, however, is NOT what writing is about, so whatever advice you and others are giving, again, you might be sharing your experience of what worked for you, but that's about it.
Yes, everybody has a voice here, but Medium is losing readers. Those of us who earn have seen our readership and money fall of this past month to depths not experienced for a very long time.
Why? Because Medium is running at a loss, and it's running at a loss because it's hemmoraging readers. Believe it or not, it's not suppsoed to be writers that you look to for your readership. You're actually supposed to look at people who read. And, no, these days, most writers don't read.
Medium has not made a profit since its inception - that's 9 years. Ev Williams is probably footing this out of his own pocket.
I also think that Ev Williams has given up on his original plan - to open a magazine that is not supported by advertising, and he is now turning this site into a place for wannabe writers. As such most of the professional writers will be leaving. It will take a year or so for us to set up elsewhere, but that's more or less what is happening now.
We came here to earn a living - but the readership has gone. No point in being here.
So, Now you have my response. As I said in one of my latest articles, if you've come here to learn to write. you'll be with a lot of other people who are doing the same. You'll all get along very well together.
Best of luck to you.
