Medium has never run at a profit. It has been running at a loss since inception. Ev Williams is probably paying for this out of his own pocket.

I'm an ex software programmer and I also used to do web design. I think there was a fuck-up in the algorithm because there is no way in hell that Medium is going to send fewer readers to read stories. They will lose out financially by doing this. They are trying to increase readership not decrease it.
