Let me explain those terms to you. From Marx, the term communist means that all businesses are owned by the workers. So, for instance, in America, you have co-ops. That's a communist model. Communism NEVER had freedom removed. It never had governments telling you what to do.
Let me explain Socialism to you from Marx's point of view. It's when the government, owns all or some means of production. Some services need to be owned by the government because business prices them right out of the hands of citizens. Rail, water, etc. are all owned by government in most of western Eruope. They are well run and inexpensive.
I grew up with rail, phones, electricity, trains, and plaines all owned by government. Hospitals were as well, So were many other things. It was a great system. Since business has owned it, they've all become inefficient and expensive. Thank you, but no thank you.
With regard to socialism, you get the fascist type (which I think is what Americans refer to) and that's when the government not only owns the means of production, but tells other people what to do. For instance, in America, government is now telling a woman she can't have an abortion. That is fascism.
You also get democratic socialism which is what Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the EU, have. It's when the people vote for what services they want the government to pay for...
