I've watched a lot of off-grid people. It's laughable. Do you know how much technology they use? Camp stoves. Tools operated by batteries, etc. They can only live off-grid by taking advantage of of tech.
I was born and bred in Africa. Believe me, that's where people really live off grid.
Besides that, there is nothing that prevents these off-grid communities from being destroyed by sudden tornadoes, floods or fires.
And, no, it's not the same thing.
