I've just written a comment about 'gatekeeping' to someone who questioned me about my comments on writers who couldn't write.

Gatekeeping serves a purpose. It ensures that only people with the requisite knowledge can practice as doctors and lawyers. When people are talking about gatekeepers these days, they are not talking about being prevented from going to college, they are talking about their lack of skill keeping them out. They think it ought to be okay for anyone, regardless of how bad they are at their purposed occupation, to be allowed to practice it.
