It's unwise to speak about things you don't know about. St. John's synagogue is not an orthodox synagogue. it is Reform. Many reform Jews are atheists - as am I. I also attended a Reform synagogue and I'm very much an atheist.

Judaism does not require a belief in god, nor is there anything in Judaism that focuses on an afterlife.
