It's been spoken about for a long while now, and while every now and then someone comes up with a 'breakthrough' and there is excitement that it will be with us soon, and that there will be no toxic residue, and no possibilities of major accidents, etc. I have, to date, taken it with a pinch of salt.
That said, there are always 'side effects' of everything. Every energy transaction produces something. We simply don't know enough about this. Also, the people producing these results need money to go on experimenting, so they are going to keep anything that isn't going to fly in terms of public acceptance to themselves.
I also think that this is probably not going to happen because scientists are still in the beginning stages, and I think we are going to have so many things to worry about in the future, that there will be little time to do anything except put out fires and wipe up water.
And, no, we don't need anymore heat on this planet.
