In South Africa, we have the highest percentage of baby rapes in the world. We have something like 40%. Our rate of violence is, according to some, the highest in the world, outside an active war zone.
As I spent 11 years in America, about half my life in Africa, and the rest in Europe and the UK, I see the world very differently to someone who has only lived in America.
I know for sure that giving someone a hiding does not traumatize them for life. I went to a top boarding school - the guys were caned if they did something wrong. We are now all old. Most of us are respectful, responsible citizens. We don't get drunk, We don't take drugs. Many have built successful businesses, raised wonderful kids, and navigated through thick and thin - which includes living in many countries as South Africa is extremely violent.
