In America, and this problem is more American than anything else, children are socialized froma very young age to be popular, liked, successful, etc. They are taught rubbish like they can do anything they like, and they can achieve anything they like.

As they grow older, reality sets in, and those things that they expected to happen did not happen, And that's where the malaise comes from.
