In a mixed economy, the state owns things like rail, air, telephone and electricity. I grew up in that system in South Africa and it was a helluve lot more superior than anything else I have ever lived in.

In France and in Europe, in general, rail is still owned by the state. There is also much better health care - funded by the state. This is democratic socialism.
