I was certainly wrong about the USA I thought it was a highly developed country and found out it was backwards (at the time) compared to the UK.

It also paid substantially less, had no worker protection (labour laws sucked), tax was shitty, etc The entire country shocked me - on every level. I kept trying, though because I couldn't get my head around the fact that all that was said about it was wrong.
