I'm not sure if you're referring to me here, but if you are, let me say this. While I'm sure that you did learn something from literary fiction, my point was not that some didn't learn, but that it bored most of us.
Everything you claim to have learnt from literary fiction, I learnt from reading observing the world around me, reading the news, thinking, and my own suffering. I didn't need to read literary fiction to learn those things.
In fact, the only thing that stopped me from becoming hopeless about life was good old fashioned commercial fiction. It allowed me to escape reality for a short while. :)
