If you go to Jean Jacques Rousseau, who was influenced by John Lock, when he talks about the social contract, he says that liberalism cannot work because it's not possible to meet the requirements of both the majority and the minority, if these needs conflict. Therefore, in a democracy, it is the will of the majority that rules.
The responsibility of government is to ensure an infrastructure that allows the electorate to thrive (as much as is possible, anyway). When people are more or less agreed on what this is, it works perfectly, but as we now know, one man's meat is another man's poison.
There are those who would insist that America help Ukraine because if Russia takes Ukraine, then Russia will move onto other countries because it will feel free to do so. Then Europe would be in danger, and eventually, America. And so on, and so forth.
Other's, like Chomsky (and me) thought that America and Europe should stay out of it because it could lead to WWIII.
I suppose, it's a matter of which is the greater evil. I have no idea.
Part of the responsibility of government is to determine what are the likely outcomes of various policies and actions, and then take the best path forward. It seems that politicians either are not capable of that, or they have no interest in that.
When it comes to minorities, some thrive, some don't. The Jews, despite 2000 years of persecution, having the goods stolen, victims of inquisitions and genocides, constantly on the move to avoid the next purge, and so on, took one generation after Nazi Germany to re-establish themselves.
My late father, a holocaust survivor, came to South Africa with nothing but the clothes on his back. Yet, within a few years, he was thriving. He was reporting for Reuters, was lecturing in the Royal Air Force, and after the war, started a very successful business, was instrumental in establishing the astronomical and engineering societies, and continued to lecture and to write.
He did this despite intense antisemitism, the fact that nobody wanted the Jews, that there were closed doors, and they never opened.
When Estonia left the USSR, it had a 10,000% inflation rate, no telephone system, and there was nothing there. Yet, in one generation, it became a first world country. How?
Some cultures are adept at adjusting rapidly. Parents pass down to children how to survive, what must be done for success. The children learn this, adapt and pass on to their children.
Africans in the USA have not been able to adapt. I'm not quite sure why. They certainly had more opportunities than I ever had. You must be aware that there is conflict between Africans who arrive from Africa and African Americans. The Africans cannot understand what African Americans are going on about as they have so much while the African Americans look down on the Africans because ??? Who knows. I don't know. I just read about it.
I think that's about the best answer I can give you. :)
Very best to you.
