I finally realized the other day why people will spend a week debating Will Smith's slap, but can't figure out that driving a car, buying a mansion, and wearing denim jeans are contributing to cllmate change.

It's because you don't need to understand complex information to have an opinion about Will Smith. You do have to understand something of the science and the big picture to fully comprehend climate change.
